Living with an iPhone 6 in 2018

The iPhone 6 was released back in 2014. Back then, literally it was the biggest iPhone upgrade since iPhone 5. Featuring a new design, A9 chip which is the second generation of Apples 64-bit ARM-based system-on-chip, a gig of RAM, and two screen sizes- iPhone 6 with 4.7" display and iPhone 6 Plus with it's massive 5.5" 1080p FHD display. Catching up in the big phone market or as they called "phablet" from the likes of Samsung, LG, and other manufacturers. Even if Apple is late in the big phone trend, they have proven that they can do make better and the sales report speaks for itself.

Because of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus success, Apple keeps this design form factor until 2017 with the release of iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. Keeping the design with some minor tweaks and specs bumps like using a capacitive home button instead of the physical one. Adding another camera at the back with iPhone 7 which enables portrait mode, pressure-sensitive display aka 3D Touch and the controversial death of 3.5mm headphone jack.

One thing I would like to commend Apple is their software update. Unlike Android phones, Apple controlled everything from hardware to software which allows them to integrate and optimize their products very well. As of this writing, iOS 12 was released about a few days ago supporting up to the 5-year old devices like the iPhone 5s. I download and install iOS12 the very first day it was rolled out, and I can and feel the difference. I think battery performance is the biggest improvement I have noticed with iOS12 though I can always charge my phone on the go, any time and anywhere with my high capacity power bank from SlickSmith Tech.

I consider my self as an average consumer. I do casual gaming like Plant vs Zombie 2 (yeah I'm old fashion), SkyForce Reloaded but for my daily usage, I rarely use resource-demanding apps. I define an average customer like opening social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube. Messaging app for work like Hangouts, Slack, Skype. Online shopping like Lazada and Shopee. Using a digital wallet like PayPal, Gcash, and Coins. Most of these apps run smoothly on a low-end Android phone and even on iPhone 4s. My iPhone 6 just handle and run those apps perfectly fine.

Like everybody else (especially Apple fans), I've been dreaming about getting the latest and greatest one. The iPhone X looks really beautiful, modern, and advance. Wireless charging becoming a thing with Apple, with the current pace of wireless charger technology today, I do believe this would be the future of all smartphone. Going back to that iPhone X, I guess I have to wait for another 4-5 years to get that on my hand. The issue? That $999 price tag makes me feel like I'm biting a lemon. In the Philippines, average Filipino worker earns about P20 to P30 thousand a month and based on my calculation the iPhone X would cost around P58 thousand. That's a lot of money for just a smartphone.

Lastly, my iPhone 6 just works fine so why upgrade? Even if I have the money today, I would think twice buying a new phone unless something happens to my phone, which I hope not.
